Do you remember how you felt when you sent your little one off to Kindergarten? Today is my oldest boy's birthday and it just seems like yesterday when he had his first day of Kindergarten in Ignace! I was nervous, anxious and worried for him, as I was five years later for my youngest. Wait until you send them off to University - yikes! Let me reassure you though, Kindergarten is a wonderful place of learning, socialization, and fun; as a parent, you can't be prouder when your child is happy and learning and making friends!

I'm sure all the parents of three and four year olds who are reading this have many questions about Kindergarten. To help you out, we're hosting Kindergarten Information Week, January 25th - 29th at our Kenora Public Elementary Schools. We start the week off with a Kindergarten Symposium, Sunday Jan. 25th, 1 - 3 p.m. at Beaver Brae's gymnasium. Bring your children, participate in Kindergarten activities, meet our wonderful Full Day Early Learning Kindergarten staff and get answers to all of your questions. Keewatin Public School, Evergreen Public School, Valleyview Public School and King George Public School are working together to welcome you and your little ones to our Kindergarten programs. Expect age-appropriate fun activities for your child, door prizes, healthy snacks and learn all you need to know about Kindergarten at all of our quality Kenora Public Schools. We've arranged transportation from various community sites to Beaver Brae, so call any of our schools for more information about pick-up locations. We look forward to seeing you there!

At King George, we're hosting an Open House in our Kindergarten wing, Tuesday evening, January 27th, starting at 6 p.m. Please tour our newly renovated Kindergarten facilities and meet us personally. On Monday to Thursday of January 25th to 29th, both myself and Ms. Mutrie, our vice-principal, have set our week aside for scheduled personal appointments. If you are considering King George for Kindergarten, please call us at 468-7570 for your personal appointment and school tour. We've much to share with you and know that we can ease any nervousness you may be experiencing about starting school at King George Vi Public School.

Looking forward to meeting you and your family, Mrs. McAughey

Please share this message with your friends and families throughout the community!

CONSTRUCTION UPDATE!  It is so exciting to see the renovation and construction projects progressing!  We will continue to see active landscaping in the playgrounds and construction in the day-care area of King George VI School throughout the fall.  Please talk to our King George VI Students about playing in the safely supervised areas and avoiding all construction areas (which are all fenced off).  When dropping our students off at our school, please follow the new traffic routes and parking areas.  Follow direction from our friendly school staff and observe the signage throughout the site.  Use our QUICK LINK on the main page to see our new site map.  We look forward to seeing you Wednesday morning!  Mrs. McAughey, King George VI Principal

BIG CHANGES FOR KGVI, FALL 2014!

Staff, students, friends and families of King George VI Public School are eagerly anticipating this summer’s construction project, expanding and renovating to meet the needs of our growing school population.  The plans include a new Full Day Early Learning Kindergarten classroom with ample space and classroom areas for play-based learning and inquiry for our three to five year olds.  At a recent School Council Meeting, parents were so pleased to review the proposed outdoor plans for improved traffic flow, including our “Kiss and Ride” drop off area and separate bus zones to ensure safe student pick-up and drop-off, as well as a new fully enclosed Kindergarten playground area designed for safe play and entry into our Kindergarten rooms.  School Council members are jumping in to assist with fundraising to support the installation of additional playground equipment, and all of our staff and students are excited about the landscaped weather berm designed to stem the winter winds blowing in off Lake of the Woods!  Of utmost importance, we will be so pleased to open our renovated resource area and therapy classroom designed specifically to meet the programming and equipment requirements of our special education students at King George VI Public School - this will be a place where all student learning needs are met.  King George VI Public School will also continue its close partnership with Firefly childcare providers, hosting a newly renovated and separate day-care and continued Before & After School programs for the Fall of 2014.   We are eager to expand our existing Breakfast and Lunch for Learning programs into our newly constructed kitchen.  With close access to Kenora’s community recreation services, the dedicated work of our talented and kind staff, as well as these newly improved and renovated spaces, King George VI Public School students have a bright future! According to Kim Carlson, KPDSB Facilities Manager, construction begins as soon as school lets out for the summer…we can’t wait!

PARENT VOLUNTEERS!  Please join us Monday, September 15th at 6:30 p.m. in the newly renovated library for our 1st School Council meeting of the year.  We look forward to welcoming new families and friends of King George VI to our parent volunteer group.  We know that some folks can only assist with one event or activity; we also know there are others who commit to year-long roles.  We hope you'll consider joining us and learning more about our school community!  See you then, Mrs. McAughey, Principal.
