Choose King George VI for Kindergarten - Ask Us Why?

Choose King George VI Public School for our Full Day Early Learning- Kindergarten Program

King George VI Public School is a community school nestled in the heart of Lakeside in Kenora.  We host a welcoming learning environment with specialized Kindergarten teachers and certified Early Childhood Educators who are experts in early childhood development and the care of your child.  Our newly renovated and expanded Early Learning classrooms and playground areas are designed specifically for the safety and learning of our four and five year olds.  Our Kindergarten wing houses two classrooms with kid-friendly washrooms, cloakrooms, and a private entrance with direct access to the newly designed and landscaped playground – our gated and fully supervised area is a perfect playspace for fun and adventure!  It’s a safe, spacious and enclosed playground with a shade canopy and it’s always staffed with a caring Kindergarten educator and supervisor. Our Kindergarten students are picked up and dropped off at the gate beside the visitor parking lot where parking is reserved for Kindergarten families.  Older students are dropped in our family Kiss & Ride area, separate from our Kindergarten wing. Students who require bus transportation to school are supervised from bus drop-off to the Kindergarten wing and are escorted to and from the buses by our Early Childhood educators.  Our Lakeside school community has crossing guards to support students who walk to and from school with their siblings or families.  If you require before-school or after-school daycare programming, please contact Firefly Childcare at 467-5437.  At King George VI Public School – your child’s care and  safety comes first!

Kindergarten Learning at King George VI Public School

Daily learning activities in FDELK are balanced throughout the day with direct instruction in supporting early language, literacy and mathematics as well as free choice and guided activities designed to support inquiry, play and learning.  Our program provides opportunities for  our students to explore, discover and practise concepts from the Ontario Kindergarten Curriculum. Smartboards and iPads are regularly used for educational games and activities to enhance student learning.  Children have a natural curiosity and inquiry based learning is used to build on a child’s spontaneous desire for exploration.  Our Early Learning team guides our students through these explorations using a variety of questions, helping them to become more focused and systematic in their investigations.

Kindergarten students stay within the same classroom, with the same teacher and Early Childhood Educator for both Year 1 and Year 2 of the program; your child will establish a positive learning relationship with these caring educators!  We are so proud and amazed by how much our four and five year olds can learn in a quality play-based proram with a focus on early reading!  It makes for a busy, happy group of students, with well over 90% of our King George students reading before they leave Kindergarten!  Choose King George VI Public School for your child’s learning – our quality program and amazing staff won’t disappoint you!

King George VI School Community

Join a strong and vibrant community of parents, families and educators – all with high expectations for student wellness and achievement.  At King George VI we put our students first.  Breakfast and healthy snack programs are in place so students are well-fed and ready to learn!  We’re proud of our Recreation and Athletic Program, promoting sports and fitness coaching and activities for our students in Grades 4 -6.  We’re in close proximity to Kenora’s Recreation Centre as all of our students participate in swimming lessons each year.  We also work and play hard to develop our Junior Bronco hockey players!

Our Parent Council and administration are true supporters of student and community activities.  We host and sponsor cross-country skiing, swimming, skating, field-trips, guest-speakers and monthly school spirit assemblies.  We focus on school-wide character development so that our students learn about responsibility, respect, kindness, honesty and charity.  We strive to teach our students about the importance of being  part of our local and global community, which means giving within our community, participating locally, supporting charities, volunteering and developing empathy as they grow and learn to be good citizens.  At King George VI Public School we learn to care!

From Our School to Your Home

Communication with families is a priority for us.  Our Kindergarten teachers and ECE workers will contact families through phone calls, email or by sending notes home with your child.  Check out our Kindergarten classrooms blogs on our King George Website where we share exciting events and activities from our classrooms to your home.  Our Facebook page, King George VI School Parents, is our online family and parent connection to all that happens within our school community.   As a King George parent, we welcome you to all of our school assemblies, events and activities.  We encourage you to become as involved as you can be in our school community – our parents and families are an important part of our great school!

Getting to Know Us

Each year we host an open-house so that you have an opportunity to meet our Kindergarten teachers and Early Childhood Educations.  We provide individual family tours of our Kindergarten wing and King George VI Public School.  Please contact us at 468-7570 to make your appointment, hosted by our Principal, Mrs. Lynn McAughey or our Vice-Principal, Ms. Mutrie.  Each year we invite you to join us in August for our First Rider Program where the entire family can be there for the first ride on the big yellow school bus!  For more information, contact www.nwobus.ca.

We recognize that many of our children are very young when they enter our Year 1 program and we host a gradual entry to the Kindergarten program each fall.  Year 1 children begin their year with a gentle entry process that allows small groups of children to attend each day.  This helps alleviate anxiety and allows each student an opportunity to make new friends, get to know us better,  and learn the classroom rules and routines in a smaller group setting.  We also provide families with short term solutions if there are concerns by offering an alternate or shortened day to support each child’s initial learning needs.  Our Early Learning team will work closely with you to make sure that your child feels comfortable and at-home at King George VI Public School - starting Kindergarten is a big event and we’re experienced in helping little ones have success!
